Miguel Yajure - Tosses four scoreless innings Yajure allowed four hits and three walks over four shutout frames in Monday's loss to Washington. He did not record a strikeout or factor in the decision.
Impact It was the cleanest outing but Yajure was able to navigate around a couple of threats from the Nationals, including a bases-loaded jam in the third inning. It was his first MLB start of the year and he lowered his season ERA to 8.16 through 14.1 frames. The 24-year-old threw a season-high 65 pitches, including 41 strikes. Yajure could stick around in the rotation for another start this weekend at home against the Brewers.

Pirates vs. Nationals prediction, betting odds for MLB on Monday The Pittsburgh Pirates lock horns with the Washington Nationals in MLB on Monday. This preview includes our best bet of the game.

Max Kranick - Goes to 60-day IL The Pirates recalled Kranick (elbow) from Triple-A Indianapolis and placed him on the 60-day injured list Monday, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
Impact The transaction is merely procedural, as Kranick underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this month and is set to miss the rest of the 2022 season and most of the 2023 campaign. His addition to the 60-day IL frees up a spot on the Pirates' 40-man roster that the organization will look to fill at a later date.

Diego Castillo - Sits after five straight starts Castillo is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Nationals.
Impact Castillo started each of the past five games and went 4-for-20 with three solo home runs over that stretch, but he benefited in part from lineup regulars Ke'Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz sitting out three and one of those contests, respectively. Both Hayes and Cruz are in the lineup Monday, and with Josh VanMeter (finger) also back from the 10-day injured list and Tucupita Marcano (illness) likely to come off the COVID-19-related IL by the end of the week, the Pirates suddenly have a logjam in the infield. The righty-hitting Castillo is thus likely to find himself as an odd man out for an everyday role, though he may still see steady starts against left-handed pitching.

Hoy Jun Park - Starting, but could lose work soon Park will start at second base and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Nationals.
Impact Park remains in the starting nine for the seventh time in the last nine games, but his opportunities to play on a near-everyday basis should come to an end soon. Josh VanMeter (finger) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday, and though he'll be starting at first base in place of a resting Michael Chavis in his return to the lineup, VanMeter is projected to see most of his work at second base moving forward. Like VanMeter, Tucupita Marcano (illness) is another lefty-hitting option at the keystone, and he should be on track for a return from the COVID-19-related IL by the end of the week. Park, who also bats from the left side, thus will become somewhat redundant at second base, and the Pirates don't appear to have an opening elsewhere around the diamond or in the outfield for the 26-year-old to play regularly.

Dillon Peters - Starts up rehab assignment Peters (back) will report to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday to begin a rehab assignment, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
Impact Peters was cleared for game action in the minors after he tossed a live batting practice over the weekend without incident. The lefty has been on the shelf since June 7 with a back muscle spasms and will likely need at least a couple of appearances at Triple-A before the Pirates are comfortable reinstating him from the 15-day injured list.
9 HOURS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Michael Chavis - Not starting Monday Chavis isn't starting Monday's game against the Nationals, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact Chavis is getting a day off after he went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts over the last two games. Josh VanMeter will start at first base while Hoy Park takes over at the keystone Monday.

Josh VanMeter - Comes off IL The Pirates reinstated VanMeter (finger) from the 10-day injured list Monday. He'll start at first base and bat seventh in the Pirates' series opener in Washington.
Impact VanMeter returns to the active roster after a completing a five-game rehab assignment last week at Triple-A Indianapolis, during which he went 2-for-18 with four walks, three runs and an RBI. The 27-year-old could reclaim the strong side of a platoon at second base now that he's recovered from a fractured left ring finger, though he's not a lock to stick around as a near-everyday player for long. Fellow left-handed hitter Tucupita Marcano (illness) is currently in the midst of a rehab assignment and could unseat VanMeter as the preferred option at the keystone once reinstated from the COVID-19-related IL.
10 HOURS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Cal Mitchell - Bound for Triple-A The Pirates optioned Mitchell to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.
Impact Mitchell was dropped from the 26-man active roster to create room for infielder Josh VanMeter (finger), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. Though VanMeter wasn't a direct competitor for playing time, Mitchell will head to Triple-A since his opportunities in the Pittsburgh outfield were already tending down following the recent promotion of Bligh Madris. Mitchell had started in only three of the Pirates' last seven games and ends his first stint in the big leagues with a .552 OPS over 88 plate appearances.
10 HOURS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Anthony Banda - Cast off 40-man roster The Pirates designated Banda for assignment Monday.
Impact Banda was booted off the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster with the Pirates needing to clear room for right-hander Miguel Yajure, who was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Monday's game in Washington. Over his 23 appearances with Pittsburgh this season, Banda had languished in a middle-relief role, turning in a 6.41 ERA and 1.98 WHIP in 19.2 innings.
10 HOURS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Miguel Yajure - Recalled, starting Monday The Pirates recalled Yajure from Triple-A Indianapolis, and he'll start in Monday's game against the Nationals in Washington, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact Yajure enters the rotation as a replacement for Jerad Eickhoff, who was designated for assignment and later outrighted to Triple-A after he was roughed up for 10 runs over 4.1 innings in his Pirates debut last week. The 24-year-old previously made six appearances as a reliever for Pittsburgh earlier this season, serving up 13 earned runs on 16 hits and six walks over 10.1 innings. In his five outings with Indianapolis since being demoted May 2, Yajure hasn't covered more than 3.2 innings, so the Pirates likely won't be counting on him to work deep into Monday's start.
10 HOURS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Jerad Eickhoff - Clears waivers The Pirates outrighted Eickhoff to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday after he cleared waivers.
Impact Eickhoff will remain in the organization as a swingman at Indianapolis after he was added to and removed from the Pirates' 40-man roster following one spot start with the big club. In his Pittsburgh debut last Wednesday against the Cubs, Eickhoff was tagged for 10 earned runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four over 4.1 innings.

Impact Nicolas was cleared to make his return to Altoona's active roster as a long reliever after a three-week stint on the shelf with a shoulder injury. The 23-year-old right-hander should slot back into the rotation next week and will take a 4.15 ERA and 1.28 WHIP into his 12th outing of the season with Altoona.

Duane Underwood Jr. - Ready for rehab assignment Underwood (illness) will report to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday to begin a rehab assignment, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
Impact Underwood has been on the COVID-19-related injured list since testing positive for the virus June 13 and may require multiple rehab appearances before the Pirates activate him. Prior to landing on the IL, the reliever turned in a 4.24 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 17 innings out of the bullpen.
1 DAY AGO • ROTOWIRE
Tucupita Marcano - Begins rehab assignment Marcano (illness) started at second base and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run Sunday in his first rehab game for Single-A Bradenton.
Impact According to Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com, Marcano, who is regaining conditioning after testing positive for COVID-19 on June 17, will shift his rehab to Double-A Altoona for his next game action. He could be activated from the IL as soon as Wednesday, with Josh VanMeter (finger) also a potential candidate to be activated from the 10-day injured list around that time. Once both Marcano and VanMeter are reinstated, the two may have to battle for playing time at the keystone.

Roansy Contreras - Five walks in no-decision Contreras allowed one run on four hits and five walks while striking out four in five innings. He did not factor into the decision in a 4-2 loss Sunday in Tampa Bay.
Impact Contreras struggled with his control in the second inning and walked four batters, including one with the bases loaded. He pitched around trouble the rest of the way and held the Rays scoreless over the final three frames. Sunday's start was fairly representative of Contreras' season as the 22-year-old limited runs while pitching around walks. For the season he has a 2.76 ERA despite a 1.35 WHIP and 42:19 K:BB in 42.1 innings. His next start will likely be next weekend against Milwaukee.
